NEW DELHI: THE Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has sought details on the rollout of services and commercial launches by all telecom companies that were awarded mobile licences between 2006 and 2008, a top government official told ET.
These firms, which include Videocon, Etisalat, Loop, Telenor, Spice and S Tel, are under the scanner for not meeting their rollout obligations.
“Concerns have been expressed on how some of these firms have been allotted spectrum, but are yet to roll out operations seriously. The government is examining the matter and we will be looking at all these details before we decide the next course of action,” said the official who did not wish to be identified.
There is a view in the government that some of these firms are hoarding spectrum, the official added.
About 11 telcos were given mobile licences between 2006 and 2008, including the likes of Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular and Aircel that got permission for expanding their operations to a pan-India level.
