Lebanese security forces arrested a third man suspected of collaborating with Israeli intelligence services from within the Lebanese Telecommunications network. According to the Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar, the arrested person had also been an employee of the Alfa company and had travelled much to other Middle Eastern and European countries.
Lebanese telecommunications minister Charbel Nahhas said his the country was currently facing the task of dismantling what might be the “most dangerous work of espionage in Lebanese history”, given the telecommunication sector's vital importance for the country's defence capabilities. He emphasized that the previously arrested two pro-Israeli collaborators, Tarek al-Rabaa and Charbel Qazzi, had been working with the Alfa company since its establishment in 1996 and had acquired thorough informations even of the smallest details.
The daily As-Safir reported that Azzi allowed the Israelis remote access to the Alfa network to monitor calls, track subscribers’ locations and more dangerously, shut down the entire mobile network through the deployment of a virus that could wipe out all recorded data in a few minutes. In this context the Lebanese telecommunications minister alerted to the possibility that Israeli intelligence services might attempt to crack the Lebanese telecommunications network in retaliation for the detection and arrest of their collaborators and said efforts are under way to set up a preliminary safety network to seal the cracks through which information could possibly have leaked.
